According to the story, Ramanujan immediately countered that 1729 was in fact a very interesting number, being the smallest positive integer which is the sum of two perfect cubes in two different ways. Indeed, 1729 = 103 +93 = 123 +13.
Using a spreadsheet, one can find all such "taxicab numbers" within a specified range; for example those numbers less than 5000 that are expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.

Born October 20, 1925, Art is an American humorist best known for his long-running column in The Washington Post newspaper, which concentrates on political satire and commentary. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Outstanding Commentary in 1982 and in 1986 was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. Art Buchwald is the son of Joseph Buchwald, a curtain manufacturer, and he grew up in a residential community in the Queens Borough of New York City. He did not graduate high school, and ran away from home when he was 17.
He wanted to join the Marines but was too young so he lied about his age and bribed a drunk with half a pint of whisky to sign as his legal guardian. From October 1942 to October 1945, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps, attached to the Fourth Marine Air Wing. He spent two years in the Pacific Theater and was discharged from the service as a sergeant.
Buchwald is also known for the Buchwald v. Paramount lawsuit, which he and partner Alain Bernheim filed against Paramount Pictures in 1988 in a controversy over the Eddie Murphy movie Coming to America. Buchwald claimed Paramount had stolen his script idea.

A slave named Androcles once escaped from his master and fled to the forest. As he was wandering about there he came upon a Lion lying down moaning and groaning. At first he turned to flee, but finding that the Lion did not pursue him, he turned back and went up to him. As he came near, the Lion put out his paw, which was all swollen and bleeding, and Androcles found that a huge thorn had got into it, and was causing all the pain. He pulled out the thorn and bound up the paw of the Lion, who was soon able to rise and lick the hand of Androcles like a dog.
Then the Lion took Androcles to his cave, and every day used to bring him meat from which to live. But shortly afterwards both Androcles and the Lion were captured, and the slave was sentenced to be thrown to the Lion, after the latter had been kept without food for several days. The Emperor and all his Court came to see the spectacle, and Androcles was led out into the middle of the arena. Soon the Lion was let loose from his den, and rushed bounding and roaring towards his victim. On April 17, 1790, American statesman, printer, scientist, and writer Benjamin Franklin dies in Philadelphia at age 84.From 1732 to 1757, he wrote and published Poor Richard's Almanack, an instructive and humorous periodical in which Franklin coined such practical American proverbs as "God helps those who help themselves" and "Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise."
As his own wealth and prestige grew, Franklin took on greater civic responsibilities in Philadelphia and helped establish the city's first circulating library, police force, volunteer fire company, and an academy that became the University of Pennsylvania.
Deeply interesting in science and technology, he invented the Franklin stove, which is still manufactured today, and bifocal eyeglasses, among other practical inventions. In 1748, he turned his printing business over to his partner so he would have more time for his experiments. The phenomenon of electricity fascinated him, and in a dramatic experiment he flew a kite in a thunderstorm to prove that lightning is an electrical discharge. He later invented the lightning rod. Many terms used in discussing electricity, including positive, negative, battery, and conductor, were coined by Franklin in his scientific papers. He was the first American scientist to be highly regarded in European scientific circles.
In 1776, he helped draft the Declaration of Independence and in July signed the final document. In 1785, Franklin returned to the United States. In his last great public service, he was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and worked hard for the document's ratification. After his death in 1790, Philadelphia gave him the largest funeral the city had ever seen.

In the 1780's, part of Wrentham, Massachusetts split off from Wrentham. As was common, this group of rural Massachusetts farmers used their church as the cultural, social, religous and governmental center of the town. Unfortunately, they had no bell in the church. There was no way to summon the farmers for services, or for emergencies such as fire. As a result, they came up with a clever plan. They named their new town "Franklin", and wrote a letter to Benjamin Franklin asking him to donate a bell. However, Dr. Franklin was not so inclined. "Sense being preferable to sound," Dr. Franklin sent the good farmers a crate of books instead, and suggested they start a library. They did. It's still operating. It is the oldest public library in the United States.

If you need to square a number (two or three digits) that ends in 5, just use this trick. First, you should know that when any number squared that ends in 5 will always have the last two digits of 25. Then all ya need to do is look at the digits before the 5 and multiply it (them) by the next number higher and put that infront of the 25.

The old monk sat by the side of the road. With his eyes closed, his legs crossed and his hands folded in his lap, he sat. In deep meditation, he sat. Suddenly his zazen was interrupted by the harsh and demanding voice of a samurai warrior. "Old man! Teach me about heaven and hell!"
At first, as though he had not heard, there was no perceptible response from the monk. But gradually he began to open his eyes, the faintest hint of a smile playing around the corners of his mouth as the samurai stood there, waiting impatiently, growing more and more agitated with each passing second. "You wish to know the secrets of heaven and hell?" replied the monk at last. "You who are so unkempt. You whose hands and feet are covered with dirt. You whose hair is uncombed, whose breath is foul, whose sword is all rusty and neglected. You who are ugly and whose mother dresses you funny. You would ask me of heaven and hell?"
The samurai uttered a vile curse. He drew his sword and raised it high above his head. His face turned to crimson and the veins on his neck stood out in bold relief as he prepared to sever the monk's head from its shoulders.
"That is hell," said the old monk gently, just as the sword began its descent.
In that fraction of a second, the samurai was overcome with amazement, awe, compassion and love for this gentle being who had dared to risk his very life to give him such a teaching. He stopped his sword in mid-flight and his eyes filled with grateful tears.
"And that," said the monk, "is heaven."

Wishing to encourage her young son's progress on the piano, a mother tookher boy to a Paderewski concert. After they were seated, the mother spotteda friend in the audience and walked down the aisle to greet her. Seekingthe opportunity to explore the wonders of the concert hall, the little boyrose and eventually explored his way through a door marked "NO ADMITTANCE."When the house lights dimmed and the concert was about to begin, the motherreturned to her seat and discovered that the child was missing.Suddenly, the curtains parted and spotlights focused on the impressiveSteinway on stage.
In horror, the mother saw her little boy sitting at thekeyboard, innocently picking out "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." At thatmoment, the great piano master made his entrance, quickly moved to thepiano, and whispered in the boy's ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing." Thenleaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began fillingin the bass part. Soon his right arm reached around to the other side ofthe child and he added running obbligato. Together, the old master and theyoung naive boy transformed a frightening situation into a wonderfullycreative experience. The audience was captivated.
That's the way it was and is with our Heavenly Father. What we canaccomplish on our own is hardly noteworthy. We try our best, but theresults aren't exactly graceful flowing music. But with the hand of theMaster, our life's work truly can be beautiful. Next time you set out toaccomplish great feats, listen carefully. You can hear the voice of theMaster, whispering in your ear, "Don't quit. Keep playing." Feel Hisloving arms around you. Know that His strong hands are there, helping youturn your feeble attempts into true masterpieces. Remember, God doesn'tcall the equipped. He equips the called. There are two types of goals. Outcome goals give you direction, such as winning or making a particular play. Process goals include mastering the fundamentals and strategy to be competitive in basketball. A little boy came up to his mother in the kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and handed her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his Mom dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it said:
For cutting the grass: $5.00 For cleaning up my room this week: $1.00 For going to the store for you: $.50 Taking out the garbage: $1.00 For cleaning up and raking the yard: $2.00 Total owed: $14.75
Well, his mother looked at him standing there, and the boy could see the memories flashing through her mind. She picked up the pen, turned over the paper he'd written on, and this is what she wrote:

The True Story Of A Grateful Whale As Reported In The SF Chronicle
A female humpback whale was entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. The fifty-foot whale was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallone Islands and within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her - a very dangerous proposition. One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.
They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around - she thanked them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth says her eye was following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.

An Irish father was seeing his son off on a steamship where the lad was going to a new land with the intention of seeking his fortune in a new way of life. "Now, Michael, my boy," said the father as they parted, "remember the three bones, and ye'll always get along all right." A stranger standing nearby overheard the remark, and when the ship was underway, he asked the old gentleman what the three bones he referred to in his parting advice to his son.
"Sure, now," responded the old Irishman, "and wouldn't it be the wishbone and the jawbone and the backbone? Ugadi (literally - the start of an era) is the new year's day for the people of the Deccan region of India. While the people of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka use the term Ugadi for this festival, the people of Maharashtra term the same festival, observed on the same day, Gudi Padwa.
The day, however, begins with ritual showers followed by prayers, and then the eating of a specific mixture of -
Neem leaves for Bitterness Jaggery for Sweetness Raw Mango for Vagaru Tamarind Juice for sour Green chille for Hot Salt for salty taste This mixture, called "Ugadi Pachhadi" in Telugu and "Bevu-Bella" in Kannada, symbolizes the fact that life is a mixture of pleasure and pain, which should be accepted together and with equanimity.
The festival is called "Gudi Padwa" in Maharashtra; it heralds the advent of new year and is one of the most auspicious days for Maharashtrians. It is customary to erect 'Gudis' on the first day (Padwa) of the Marathi New Year. 'Gudi' is a bamboo staff with a colored silk cloth and a garlanded goblet atop it, which symbolizes victory or achievement. Hence, this day is known as "Gudipadwa" in Maharashtra. The New Year is ushered in with the worship of the "Gudi" and the distribution of a specific "Prasadam" comprising tender neem leaves, gram-pulse and jaggery.
